My Treatment Approach in Speech Therapy

01 — Enjoying Engagement

Children learn best through play. I do use books, images and photographs, and customized learning tools that support development of skills. Overall, however, my first goal is to ensure that your child is interested and motivated by the activities we use. If they are not engaged, they will struggle to learn. I make every session memorable and fun.

02 — Personalization

I strive to make each client feel supported, empowered, and heard through individually designed sessions. I have spent entire sessions using dinosaurs, bugs, Harry Potter, and numerous other personal-motivators. My autistic clients may present with highly-selective interests; my approach is to lean into what your child likes and enjoys to support development of skills and generalization, beginning with their favorite thing. Therapy can be done with any materials if you are flexible enough to try!

03 — Strengths-Focused

I never start goals where a child lacks skills to imitate or initiate. I am thorough to draw on emerging skills, interests, and parent preferences to use a child’s strength to help launch them to the next stage. It is very common to have areas of weakness; I build on strengths to support those areas while helping your child build the confidence they need to become a successful and independent communicator.

04 — Evidence-Based Practice

Combining clinical experience, research evidence, and patient preference are key to operating in evidence-based practice. I use the most current scientific research in my therapy and am consistently taking CEUs (continuing education units) and pursuing learning opportunities to provide the best care to my clients. I work closely with caregivers to integrate my research methods in every day life.

05 — Caregiver Training

I may only spend an hour a week with your child, so the remaining hours at home, daycare, preschool, school, or development center are integral to development of skills. I am diligent to provide routine-based strategies to make sure your child is hearing and seeing therapy techniques throughout the day- breakfast, getting dressed, in the car, bath time, etc. I LOVE watching a parent learning strategies and engaging with their child like they never have before; I’ve heard many first words this way!

06 — Sensory Integration

Regulating the sensory system is SO important for quality therapy! I am not an OT, but I am a very active and playful Therapist. I am constantly monitoring my client’s motivation and sensory needs to work in “wiggle breaks” or completely shift gears to help integrate sensory strategies into speech therapy sessions. We may do a lot of running and climbing in sessions, all to help your little one ask “faster, “ stop,” “help me,” or “Where are you Daddy?!”

07 — Compassion & Connection

Overall, my goal is to connect with your child and more importantly, your entire family. Having a child with special needs can be incredibly daunting and it’s hard to find someone that will support you, listen, and equip you with tools and resources that will help your child grow. I love walking alongside families through every season of their child’s growth.
